Waterless??? What are the Benefits?

95% of the classic car owners we meet and know, wouldn’t even consider taking their car out if there’s the threat of rain or even still puddles on the road. As a classic car owner, I completely understand. I wouldn’t dream of it.

But when it comes to the inside, why are these same people OK with pouring water into the engine block of that same car?

When using a 50/50 Anti-Freeze product, here’s what you are actually putting into your radiator, engine block and heater core.

  • Water
  • Salt
  • Acid

Doubt it? Read the ingredients on the back panel of the most popular brands of Anti-Freeze or visit www.whatsinproducts.com see what your brand of choice contains.  You really need to give serious consideration to making the change to Evans Waterless Coolant. In all your cars.  Evans Waterless Coolant doesn’t boil until 375 degrees F, but it’s far more than just coolant.

What Every Car Guy Should Know About Waterless Coolant

Corroded engine blockWaterless coolant. Let’s state the obvious: Evans Waterless Coolant is different from regular coolant firstly, because there is no water in it. Waterless coolant is made up of the same basic glycols coolant but operates much differently without the water. There are a couple of waterless coolant companies on the market, but only Evans Waterless Coolant markets worldwide.

Temperature. The boiling point of Evans Waterless Coolant is 375 degrees Fahrenheit and it  has a freezing point of -40 degrees Fahrenheit. Instead of expanding when frozen, Waterless Coolant actually shrinks in volume.

Stability. Unlike standard antifreeze, Waterless coolant additives do not fall out of solution. Stable additives are added to the waterless coolant so the coolant never goes bad, whether it is used or still sitting in the container, so it never has to be replaced.

Vapor pressure. Waterless coolant doesn’t build vapor pressure in the system. There is moderate pressure build-up from a 7-percent fluid expansion, so if you open the radiator cap when the coolant is hot, it may spill out a few tablespoons, but nowhere near the pressure that can blow up in your face like regular coolant. NOTE: If not properly dried and residual water still in the system (over 3 to 5 percent), vapor pressure will still build.

Corrosion. Many waterless coolants, including Evans’ old formula, would still cause corrosion with an addition of only 3-percent water. Evans Coolant will still protect with up to 60 percent water. With water in the system (over 5 percent), it will not retain its lifetime use with water added and will go bad within a few years.

Hot spots. With water based coolant, when you get vapor in the cylinder-head passages, the vapor pushes the liquid away from the metal in that spot. In these areas, the metal’s temperature can be raised by hundreds of degrees causing detonation, warped heads and blown head gaskets. With waterless coolant, these hot spots don’t develop, because the waterless liquid will always be in contact with the metal to cool it down.

Conversion. Converting the system, while not difficult (depending on your make/model), is a time-consuming task. As an authorized Evans Conversion Center, we have been converting cars, trucks, commercial vehicles, deliver trucks, for the past 30 years. Proper conversion includes, draining the cooling system completely. Blowing heated, compressed air through the block, introducing either the waterless coolant or prep fluid (the prep fluid saves a few dollars) in the radiator. Then, drain and blow it out again before the final assembly and coolant fill. When complete, the system fluid needs to test below 3% water.
